If your Client has extra shirt fabric in the lower back of his shirt, you may have tried to fix this by reducing the finished waist, just to discover that it makes the front midsection too snug. Darts are created to correct this exact fit issue!
Darts are two vertical seams sewn into the back of a dress shirt. Each dart has a depth of 3/8” at its widest point at the waist. The 2 darts combined remove 3/4” total from the back of the shirt. Darts start at the armhole and end 3” above the hem of the shirt.
Darts are created to remove excess fabric from the lower back of the shirt without reducing the finished waist measurement. Many Clients have a curve in their lower back so adding darts to the shirt will improve the shape of the shirt in that area.
Adding darts will not reduce the size of the shirt midsection. When darts are added the shirtwaist will still measure what has been ordered. The 3/4” taken from the back of the shirt is redispersed to the front. This way just the shape of the shirt is improved, not increased.
If your Client wants to reduce the amount of fabric just at the lower back but likes how the shirt fits at the stomach, we suggest reducing the waist by 0.50” and select the dart option located in the Style Options section of your Client’s order.
