The workshop was led by Erin Murphy and Fangfang Zhang, who provided technical insights and practical demonstrations using Director of Finance Richard Frye as the model.
Key Points
- Fit Preferences
Trim, Slim, and Classic: The workshops emphasized understanding how different fit preferences (Trim, Slim, Classic) affect the garment’s final appearance and fit on the client. Trim fit provides a balanced, modern look; Slim fit offers a snug, contemporary style; Classic fit ensures a relaxed, traditional appearance.
Impact on Garments: Selecting different fit preferences changes the garment’s construction, including aspects like ease, waist placement, and leg openings.
- Garment Construction and Adjustments
Sport Coats and Trousers: The workshops demonstrated how changes in fit preferences impact both sport coats and trousers. Specific focus was on aspects like shoulder fit, chest size, and the ease around the waist and hips.
Chest Pieces: Participants were shown the differences between standard and soft chest pieces, encouraging them to feel the differences in layers and construction to understand their impact on the garment’s fit.
Alterations and Adjustments: Techniques for making precise alterations were discussed, such as adjusting for shoulder width, waist and hip measurements, and leg openings. The importance of small incremental adjustments to maintain garment proportion and fit was highlighted.
- Practical Demonstrations
Model Demonstrations: Richard modeled different fit preferences, allowing participants to see firsthand how each preference alters the look and feel of the garments. This included observing the impact of different fits on movement and comfort.
Interactive Sessions: Workshops included interactive elements where participants could handle chest pieces and shoulder pads, and engage in Q&A sessions to clarify doubts about fit and construction.
- Client Interaction and Measurement Techniques
Understanding Client Needs: Emphasis was placed on how to gauge client preferences and translate them into appropriate fit choices. Stylists were encouraged to ask Clients detailed questions about their desired look and comfort levels.

Key Highlights
Retail Calendar and Product Launches
The retail calendar starts in February and ends in January, guiding the product launch rhythm.
Major product launches (fall/winter and spring/summer) are front-loaded to ensure swatches and products are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively.

Early season sales data guide decisions to replenish popular items.
Examples include the stretch twill tech pant, which saw high demand and was restocked based on initial sales performance.

Modern interpretations of traditional fabrics like corduroy are designed to be more durable and easier to care for.
